Norwich Junior Chess Club

Norwich Junior Club v Bury Knights

24 players from Norwich Junior Club made the journey to Bury St Edmunds on the 23rd January to take on a team from Bury Knights, the biggest junior club in Suffolk. The top 6 boards played two games counting for two points each game while the remaining 18 boards played 4 games at a point each. With each player potentially scoring 4 points, the overall score was 62-34 to Norwich, which sounds overwhelming. In fact the big score was mainly due to the bottom 8 boards, which Norwich won 28-4 without losing a single game, while over the top 6 boards Bury won 16-8 (and the top 4 they won 15-1, as Norwich only managed one draw from 8 games). Several Norwich players scored 4/4: Kian Moghaddas, Yuming Bian, Ellice Chen, Jack Connell, Benedict Ward, and Arjun Kamath, Jaideep Chopra, Aniruddh Prabhu, Arshia Bhatia and Dev Kamath only conceded one draw each.

The average age of the teams was noticeably in Norwich’s favour, with a majority of secondary school players, while the Bury team was noticeably younger. One feature which partly explains their dominance on the top boards was the fact that the top Bury players all play regularly in the adult league, which none of the Norwich players do (although they ARE good enough).
